Table Beer Thursdays In Webb's City Cellar
Imagine, if you will, a beer that pairs with everything. Cheese? Perfect. Grilled chicken? Flawless. Date night? Romance. Being a couch potato? Better snag a 4-pack. Imagine now that once a week at Webb’s City Cellar, you can have four ounces of that beer just for simply existing. Well around these parts we call that Table Beer Thursday. See you there?
While Table Beer Thursday is a new program, it was always part of the plan according to Khris Johnson, Green Bench Head Brewer & Co-Owner. At Table Beer Thursday (4-10p every Thursday) guests may enjoy not only our already thoughtful and exploratory offerings, but a selection of small pours of beers normally only offered by the bottle. Those are carefully curated by James, our most senior Cellar bartender. He selects one each of a wild, mixed culture, and spontaneous bottle, taking care to carve a flavor path for guests to explore the entirety of or simply select a favorite to savor. Those bottles are also discounted that day, for those looking to indulge in a full-bottle experience or take home a souvenir.
I still haven’t gotten to the best part. At Table Beer Thursday, one simply must arrive for a reward. Perhaps it’s been a stressful day or the very best day. Perhaps the dog wouldn’t come inside this morning or the avocados ripened just in time for lunch. Perhaps things are a little dull, lackluster. If there is a problem to solve, we have the solution. If there is a celebration to be had, we have the libation. Table beer.
As I mentioned earlier, guests just have to cross the threshold into our comfortably cool Cellar, be greeted by one of our extensively knowledgeable and supremely friendly bartenders, and poof! A table beer to sip on while they decide. Right now we’re offering Hop for Foeder, a foeder-fermented wild saison dry-hopped with Citra and Hallertau Blanc. And the first four ounces are complimentary on Table Beer Thursday. I can’t be the only person who loves something to sip on while I decide what I want to drink. And, to me, a small saison is the perfect way to whet and warm up the palate.
For folks looking to take a table beer to their own table, we have Stead Ale available in 330mL bottles for $4 or four packs for $12.
Khris truly believes that Stead Ale is a beer for “any moment.”
“The best thing about this beer is that at any moment I can drink this beer. Any moment. If it’s cold or hot, or if I’m eating, or if I’m, y’know, watching a football game. I could drink this beer in any one of those settings. It could replace a baseball beer for me easily. It could be a beer I drink with wings, nachos, or a beer I drink with lamb chops & roasted carrots. It could literally fit any meal. I could eat oysters with this beer!”
While Khris and I sat in the Cellar enjoying bottles of Stead Ale, he walked me through the history of Green Bench saison and what makes table beer a table beer. How the consumers’ palates and desires have changed enough for him to make a double-dry hopped table beer and how exciting that is for the future of our beer. He lauded the table beers of such esteemed breweries as Allagash, Yazoo, Jester King, Birds Fly South, and fellow Florida brewery Odd Breed. What an excellent table to enjoy a table beer at, and I bet yours is too.
